Scope and Contents
This series contains Gabler's correspondence with family and friends. Most notably Gabler maintained a longstanding personal and professional friendship with brother-in-law Jack Crystal, who worked at the Commodore Music Shop. In later years Gabler also corresponded with nephew Billy Crystal. Notable personal friends include Sammy Davis Jr. and Lucille Armstrong (wife of the late Louis Armstrong). The materials also encompasses Gabler's creative work as a lyricist working in collaboration with various composers. In addition to correspondence and lyrics, Gabler also wrote several articles, original biographical sketches, and sales letters. Gabler also collected articles and photocopies of monograph excerpts that mentioned his work at Commodore. Finally, Gabler granted numerous interviews, several of which are included as transcripts within the collection. The transcripts provide personal reflections on his life and work. Much of the correspondence relates to professional matters for either Decca or Commodore Records. Many of Gabler's letters refer to his career. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent. The letters between the two parties are then interfiled chronologically.
