"Ace Daklugie, son of Juh, Chief of the Nednhi (Chiricahua) Apaches, and Ishton, sister of Geronimo. Surrendered with Mangus, son of Mangas Colorado, was sent to Florida, then to Carlisle. Outstanding man of the Chiricahua Apache, and selected by Geronimo as his successor. Interpreted to Barrett Geronimo's Story Of His Life. Has given me material for a book. Died April, 1955."--E. Ball. "Though he came here [Mescalero] in 1911 from Fort Sill, and the Reservation was not under the chief type of government, Ace wielded all the power of one, many times overruling council and Agent, for the Apaches depended upon his judgement and intelligence for leadership." --Eve Ball letter, August 27, 1957.
