Scope and Contents

Contains: (1) A vocabulary in Powell's hand, semantically arranged. Includes terms for: parts of the body; relationships; (including ordinals); implements and utensils; dress and ornaments; firmament and meteorological phenomena; time; winter moons; geography; places; animals (including birds, reptiles, insects, and fish), colors; plants, fruits, etc.; names of tribes, and proper names; nouns; adjectives; comparison of adjectives; pronouns (including number and cases); verbs; adverbs; prepositions; interjections; prefixes and suffixes; phrases; sprites, spirits; mythological figures; and "To be looked up." Includes material copied from Powell's Journals Nos. 4 and 11 and [Paiute linguistic and ethnographic notes]. (2) A scribe's copy of the vocabulary, semantically arranged. This copy incorporates corrections by Powell, but introduces new errors. This vocabulary omits "Names of tribes and proper names" of the original and adds "Sayings," which is not found in the original. (3) A scribe's copy of the vocabulary made on slips, arranged in English, and taped onto sheets of paper.
