Scope and Contents

Contains: (1) Northern Paiute vocabulary recorded by Powell in a partial Introduction to the Study of Indian Languages schedule (1880). The vocabulary is titled in Powell's hand "Numu, Western Shoshone, Western Nevada." This title is in error; the vocabulary is not Shoshone. The vocabulary contains the schedules for 1. Persons; 2. Parts of the Body; 17. Kinship; and 25. Number and Gender of Nouns. Four sheets of letterhead stationary with additional notes have been interfiled. A note on Schedule 17. Kinship states "All these terms corrected by extra sheets 1-19" [see (2) below]. (2) "Extra sheets" containing kinships terms. (3) Copies of kinship terms copied from Schedule 17. Kinship.

Conservation

The Introduction to the Study of Indian Languages schedule (1880) was laminated and bound by the BAE at an unknown date (circa 1960s). The binding was removed during processing in 2025.
