General

CDR copy Tapes FW-ASCH-7RR-0743, -0744 were recorded on Machias Seal Island, Maine, prior to March 19, 1956. They include sounds of puffins, terns and fog horns and were recorded by Floyd J. Owen of Stratford, Connecticut . A letter from Mr. Owen dated 3/19/56, in the -0744 tape box, addressed to Folkways, states that he was glad to hear that the recording would be released soon; the letter then discusses the subject of photos for the LP cover and suggests that the record be advertised in the National Audubon Magazine. However, I can find no evidence that any Folkways recording ever utilized any material from these tapes. A copy of the letter is in the new tape box. The back of the tape box for -0743 has detailed information about the different tracks; a copy is in the CD jewel case and new tape box. The back of the tape box for -0744 states that the tape was an excerpt from an hour-long recording; -0744 lasts only for eight minutes.
