General

The Heidi M. Green and Michael Kluger Garden is located in Poinciana Park, a historic housing development in Palm Beach, Florida. Established in 2013, the 54 acre property offers a monochromatic garden in the Mediterranean style reminiscent of Heidi M. Green's childhood summers spent in the south of France. Green chose landscape architect Fernando Wong, and his associate Tim Johnson, for the project. In 2018, the garden was awarded the Leslie Smith Award for Garden Design by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. The garden plan is linear and the sight-lines are carefully directed by two parallel corridors running east west which border the pool house. These are connected by a long allée defined by the slender trunks of Hurricane Palms and punctuated at each end by an obelisk framed by Foxtail Palms. Large terracotta jars at the ends of the corridors and a primitive stone trough add to the rustic ambiance. It is a garden of simple forms and the many shades of green are occasionally interrupted by the gray foliage of Silver Buttonwoods and Cardoons. The exceptions to this monochromatic motif are the lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and several walls of Confederate Jasmine which are allowed to bloom in the spring filling the air with their fragrance. The Mediterranean Revival Style house, featuring a red tiled roof and stucco exterior, was constructed in 1928 by a local contractor, E.B. Walton. The property doubled in size in the 1990's when a previous owner purchased an adjacent house which, when modified, became the pool house (its driveway becoming part of the current allée). The main house was also reconfigured at that time by architect Jacqueline Albarran.
Persons associated with the garden design include: Jacqueline Albarran (architect, 2013), Fernando Wong (landscape designer, 2013), Tim Johnson (associate of Fernando Wong, 2013) and Mario Nievera (landscape architect, 2000-2012).
