General
Built in the early 19th century, the Federal-style Phoenix House was named for its former owner, innkeeper William Phoenix. It was used from 1857 to 1907 as a boardinghouse by Phoenix's daughters and has Greek Revival-style porches added in 1840. The property was donated to the people of Mendham in 1938 and since 1960 has housed borough offices. The gardens are maintained by the Mendham Garden Club with assistance from local Boy Scouts.
