General
Designed by Alice Recknagel Ireys, with a house by architect Julian Augustus Fay, this property belonging to Rolland Taylor was located along Long Island Sound in Connecticut. A more precise location has yet to be determined. Ireys thought well enough of the project to include it in her 1967 book, which explains the large number of Adams photographs documenting the site. Taking advantage of the vista from the house to the water, Ireys designed three terraces: one adjacent to the kitchen for informal dining, a second in the center of the house for entertaining, and a third outside the owner's bedroom as a private retreat. Shrubs and roses bordering the house provided "garden" interest along with some shade and ornamental trees. Records for this project may be found in Ireys's papers at Smith College.
Persons associated with the garden include: Alice Recknagel Ireys (landscape architect, ca. 1960-1967); Julian Augustus Fay (architect, ca. 1960); and Rolland Taylor (former owner, ca. 1960-1967).
