Description
America's TV Sports Magazine Weekend Kickoff published by the Weekend Company for the Washington Post (Volume 1, Number 2) 1974.
The magazine's cover features a color illustration of the Pittsburgh Steelers (Joe Gilliam, 17) and the Atlanta Falcons (Claude Humphrey, 87) playing football. Magazine articles include: Jim Thorpe's Son Life With Father by Paul Zimmerman, Mean Joe Greene Says He Isn't Mean by Bill Christine, Notes of an Equipment Manager by Joe Falls and Free Safety Bill Bradley by Dave Klein.
The TV lineup for the weekend is also covered: Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers on ABC at 9, Washington Redskins at St. Louis Rams on CBS at 2, Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins on NBC at 1 and the Oakland Raiders at the San Francisco 49ers on NBC at 4. Joe Gilliam featured on the cover was the first African American to start at quarterback since the 1970 merger. Claude Humphrey was elected to the Professinal Football Hall of Fame in 2014. Humphrey was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1968 with the Falcons but he would later help lead the Philadephia Eagles to Super Bowl XV. The Pittsburgh Steelers would win the 1974 Super Bowl (IX) over the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 16-6. Although Gilliam started the season as the Steelers starting quarterback, he would eventually be supplanted by Terry Bradshaw.
