Object Details
Description (Brief)
This is a piece of one of the hijacked airplanes (American Airlines Flight 11 or United Airlines Flight 175) that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Because most of the fuselage melted in the fires that brought down the towers, the only parts of the aircraft that could be recovered were pieces that were sheared off on impact. This aluminum airplane fuselage fragment is white, silver, and black. The yellow-green paint on the fragment indicates that the FBI didn't need that piece as evidence anymore and therefore released it to the Smithsonian.
