Wolff, Amelia Josephine Papelka

Description

This appliqued “Sunbonnet Sue’" pattern crib quilt was made by Amelia Josephine (nee Papelka) Wolff for her grandniece, Jean Lee Eareckson, about 1930. Amelia, born 1867, immigrated as a baby to Iowa with her parents and siblings from Crudim, E. Bohemia. She married Andrew Wolff, a brick merchant and they lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Amelia died in 1937.
The “Sunbonnet Sue” pattern was a popular pattern in the early 20th century; this one is hand stitched, hand quilted, appliqued and embroidered. The sunbonnet babies are grouped in two rows in sets of 4; the hands and feet are outlined in black. A floral design was used for the quilting pattern on the pink border; grid quilting for the center.
