    Description

    In the earliest years of the United States, it was common practice for each state to issue its own coins. From 1786 to 1788, New Jersey issued copper cents bearing a shield design similar to that seen on cents made today. This series of New Jersey cents are the first coins known to carry the nation’s motto – E Pluribus Unum.
