Smithsonian Associates will present an exclusive live-streamed event with actor Martin Sheen Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m. ET. In conversation with U.S. News and World Report White House correspondent and columnist Ken Walsh, Sheen will discuss his iconic role on The West Wing, as well the impact of the show on television’s depiction of government and how real-life national leaders are viewed.

Sheen’s acting career spans more than five decades, including films like Apocalypse Now and Badlands, but to millions he is known simply as President Josiah Bartlet in the mold-breaking series The West Wing. Winning a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for this role, he created an indelible portrait of a popular Democratic president trying to lead the country while in conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress. What became the hallmark of his character and the show was an emphasis on what goes on behind the scenes, the discussions and decision making the public never sees.

Ticket prices are $20 for Smithsonian Associates members and $25 for the general public. Tickets and information are available at www.smithsonianassociates.org.

The program is part of Smithsonian Associates Streaming, a new online learning initiative presenting individual programs, multi-part courses, studio arts classes and virtual study tours offered through Zoom.

For 55 years, Smithsonian Associates—the world’s largest museum-based education program—has produced vibrant educational and cultural programming that brings the Smithsonian to life. Inspired by the Smithsonian’s research, collections and exhibitions nearly 1,000 public programs spark creativity and excite learning in people of all ages each year.
