Tropical forests are home to many species, but individuals of a species may be very rare. The planting design of the Agua Salud experiment makes it possible for researchers to address other questions: they have enough individuals of each species to better understand if their behavioris representative of the group.

But no one knows why so many tropical trees team up with bacteria to capture nitrogen from the air when they already grow in nitrogen-rich soils.
