The humbly born, self-educated Englishman never gained full admission to the honor roll of individuals who led the American Revolution, although his words—"These are the times that try men's souls"—are among the most often quoted of the period. Likenesses of Paine in this small exhibition include a portrait by John Wesley Jarvis as well as caricatures by British, French, and American satiric artists.
