Visit 49 oil paintings and sculptures by artists who contributed significantly to the mainstream of American art. Included are primitive portraits by Joshua Johnson, believed to be the first African American to acquire fame as a portraitist; landscapes by Robert Scott Duncanson, whose works received lavish praise in Europe; landscapes by Edward Mitchell Bannister, who was influenced by the Hudson River and Barbizon schools; neoclassical marble sculpture by Edmonia Lewis, the first known African American woman sculptor; and allegorical subjects and views of North Africa by Henry Ossawa Tanner.
