This retrospective of approximately 50 paintings and 4 painted constructions—from the late 1960s to the present—reviews the achievements of this Chicago "imagist." Brown's work combines a simplified, almost cartoonlike style with subjects inspired by the contemporary world: skyscrapers and street scenes people with mysterious, 1940s-looking city dwellers; tourists amid spectacular skies and landscapes; natural and man-made disasters; bibilical themes; and horrific news events, such as terrorism and mass murder.
