Recent Acquisitions: Japanese Art

On view are 2 recent acquisitions of Japanese art made by the Sackler Gallery: a gold-and-black lacquer ceremonial palanquin, a vehicle made to carry a Japanese noblewoman of the late 18th or 19th century to her wedding, and a pair of 17th-century 6-panel folding screens which feature paintings that illustrate the ancient Japanese story of the conquest of Shuten Doji, the demon of Mount Oe, by the warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu.
