Harvey Dinnerstein studied with the magic realist Yasuo Kuniyoshi, the lyrical realist Julian Levi, and, his most important teacher, Moses Soyer—a social realist. Dinnerstein's traditional realist style utilizes the focused light that recalls the works of Caravaggio, Watteau, and Manet. This painting, portraying neighborhood activities around a brownstone's doorway, represents a conscious rebuttal to abstract art.
