On loan from France's national portrait collection are 43 paintings dating from the reign of Louis XIII (1610-1643) to the final years of the monarchy under Emperor Napoleon III (1851-1871). This exhibition presents the works of some of the nation's most famous artists, including Phillipe de Champaigne, Jacques-Louis David, and Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres. Among the likenesses on view are those of Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, Jean Paul Marat, and Voltaire.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, the paintings were returned to France for reinstallation in the newly renovated rooms of the Chateau of Versailles.
