From 22 B.C.—when King Herod the Great of Judea founded the city on the present-day Israeli coast—until the late 13th century A.D., Caesarea served as an important urban center and Mediterranean seaport through 6 historical periods: Hellenistic, Herodian, Roman, Byzantine, Muslim, and the Crusades.
Exhibited are more than 200 archaeological artifacts including:
- - a statue of the Greek goddess Tyche
- - Islamic jewelry
- - Byzantine mosaics
- - glassware, coins, and culinary items
Models re-create:
- - Caesarea harbor
- - period ships
- - Crusader burials
- - the sanctuary of the god Mithras
Also examined are the land and underwater archaeological techniques employed over the last 15 years to recover these artifacts.
The exhibition is jointly organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), the University of Maryland Center for Archaeology, and the Israeli Dept. of Antiquities and Museums.
