This major retrospective offers 111 works of painting, graphics, and stained glass, which document American John La Farge's interest in many of the most forward-looking aspects of French art—impressionism, a love of the primitive and exotic, new forms and colors, and a re-evaluation of the nature of expression and sensation. La Farge is considered 19th-century America's most versatile, intellectual, and cosmopolitan artist, and served as a creative catalyst to Henry James, Winslow Homer, Stanford White, and other leading figures of his day.
