The Golden Eye: An International Tribute to the Artisans of India
November 5, 1985 – February 23, 1986
On view is a major exhibition of crafts and products devised in collaboration between traditional artisans of India and world-famous designers from Europe and America. Among the designers are Mario Bellini, Sir Hugh Casson, Ivan Chermayeff, Milton Glaser, Jack Lenor Larsen, Mary McFadden, Frei Otto, Bernard Rudofsky, and Ettore Sottsass. Among the works on view, all fabricated in India, are carved stone benches designed by Bellini; stone-inlay tables designed by Sottsass; brocades, beaded garments, embroidery, and floor panels for a Moghul garden by Mary McFadden; and woolen crewel upholstery by Jack Lenor Larsen.
The exhibition was conceived by designer Rajeev Sethi and organized by the Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation of India, Ltd., with Cooper-Hewitt.
