The exhibition celebrates the bicentennary of the first Congress. On view are portraits of significant members, their loved ones, and certain constituents who had cause to petition the legislature. Included are portraits of James Madison, Elbridge Gerry, Roger Sherman, George Clymer, Robert Morris, Charles Carroll, and Richard Henry. Painters and sculptors whose works are featured include Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, James Sharples, and John Trumbull. Contemporary prints and cartoons, official documents, personal letters, costumes, and furnishings also are displayed.
This exhibition is planned in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. The exhibition is cosponsored by the Portrait Gallery, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
