View My Visit

Survey the expressionist impulse in central European art of the past three decades. On view are works by more than 30 artists from Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. Featured artists include Arnulf Rainer, an Austrian who specializes in painted-over photographs, and Magdalene Abakanowicz, a Pole who constructs fiber figures. However, many of the artists exhibited are unknown outside their native countries; this exhibiton represents their first significant exposure in North America.

The exhibition is organized by the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna. The Hirshhorn is the exhibition's only venue in the United States.
