As part of the Directions series, Los Angeles-based artist Walead Beshty's project for the Hirshhorn includes color photograms—that updates a cameraless process pioneered by early 20th-century artists Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray—and a group of shatterproof glass sculptures fabricated to fit in standard-sized FedEx boxes that are shipped via FedEx between the artist's studio and each exhibition. Beshty creates photographs and sculptures that reconsider some of the fundamental premises of modern art. He often works with historical formats, including stereographs and photograms, but also makes use of recent technologies, such as color processes and digital printers.
