Charles Lang Freer visited Japan five times between 1895-1911 and established himself as a formidable and respected peer among Japanese collectors. Works on display reflect the evolution of his understanding of Japanese art, as well as the diversity and quality of his acquisitions. These works are exhibited with a nod to the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Freer Gallery in 1923 and offer viewers a complementary perspective to the exhibition Sylvan Sounds: Freer, Dewing, and Japan in Gallery 9.

Tea Pot, Ueda Kichibei, Japan; Edo period.
