This major exhibition reveals the early cultural life of the city and documents the history of the capital. On view are approximately 200 paintings, 25 prints, 50 photographs, representative sculpture, and a reconstruction of a late 19th-century artist's studio.

Among the artists represented are Richard Norris Brooke, John Gadsby Chapman, William Henry Holmes, Eastman Johnson, Charles Bird King, Walter Paris, August Rolle, Gilbert Stuart, and Max Weyl, as well as some who are unknown to today's public.
