The Black Box Theater showcases rotating exhibitions of contemporary artists who use film or video as their creative medium. Films or videos run continuously.

May 28, 2007-September 9, 2007: Films by Takeshi Murata, including

  • Monster Movie (2005, 4:05 min.)
  • Untitled (Pink Dot) (2006, 5 min.)
  • Cone Eater (2004, 4:05 min.)

Takeshi Murata (born 1974, lives and works in Los Angeles and New York) produces films involving masterful manipulation of digital animation while also integrating hand-built dimensions. Psychedelia, abstraction, intense color, and hypnotic sound tracks, are utilized in Murata's short films.

The exhibition includes: Monster Movie (2005), a montage of scenes the artist sampled from a video of the 1981 B-movie Caveman; to make this film, Murata selected each frame, creating a final version with 7,200 images.

Untitled (Pink Dot) (2006), which references early avant-garde films, also includes borrowed feature film footage. Soundtracks developed with Robert Beatty add a hypnotic dimension to Untitled (Pink Dot) and Cone Eater.
