The exhibition consists of a single 25-minute film, “Ancha es Castilla” or “N’importe quoi” (2014). These titles loosely translate to “Anything Goes” and “Whatever,” among other renderings, but the artist prefers not to provide translations.
Exploiting DIY aspects of production using everyday objects and his own voice, Sergio Caballero (b. 1966, Barcelona), fashions a crazed tale of a child possessed by evil spirits. With a faux-menacing soundtrack that vacillates between noise and music, Caballero presents an absurdist nod to sources as diverse Goya’s Black Paintings and B-movie horror genres. Caballero’s practice has ranged from his work as a member of a graffiti collective, a place in the new music scene and a cult following on the international film circuit. This presentation is Caballero’s US museum debut.
