The Art That Is Life: The Arts and Crafts Movement in America, 1875-1920

On view are nearly 200 objects ranging from stained glass by John LaFarge and Tiffany to silver, jewelry, and books; to pottery by Rookwood and Newcomb; and architectural drawings by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Arts and Crafts movement sought to "restore joy in labor" through a return to handwork and medieval ideals of craftsmanship, and to arrive at an aesthetic of "honesty" that went hand in hand with yearnings for simpler way of expression; the antithesis of Victoriana. This was manifested in the use of simple, even spare design, and natural materials. The exhibition is arranged thematically.
