2023: Year of the Rabbit

In the Chinese zodiac 2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit. The Chinese Lunar New Year begins January 22, 2023, and starts the 15-day Spring Festival that concludes with the Lantern Festival. The Chinese zodiac rotates through a 12-year cycle of animals and the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The rabbit represents longevity, peace, and prosperity. The Year of the Rabbit is followed by the Year of the Snake. Different regions across Asia celebrate Lunar New Year in many ways and may follow a different zodiac.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with online and in-person events. Learn more about Lunar New Year celebrations with the National Museum of Asian Art, and explore the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Lunar New Year Family Zone.
