Chandra X-ray Observatory

Office of the Chief Information Officer

For millennia, people on Earth have observed the heavens through the two dimensions presented to them in the night sky. Today, powerful telescopes allow scientists to gather information about distant objects and reconstruct them in three dimensions using data. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory operates the Chandra X-ray Observatory on behalf of NASA. Chandra has been at the forefront of developing, as well as 3D printing, these 3D models both for scientific use and for the public. This suite of Chandra 3D models for you to explore features stars at various stages of the stellar life cycle.

You can learn more about the Chandra telescope and its discoveries at: https://chandra.si.edu/
