Hailed as the catcher who “stopped everything behind the plate and hit everything in front of it,” Yogi Berra was a standout performer on the New York Yankees’ roster through eighteen remarkable seasons of play (1946–63). His fielding and hitting helped propel the Bronx ball club to fourteen pennants and ten World Series championships, and earned him a place on the All-Star team for fifteen consecutive years. Berra’s self-effacing good humor and classic “Yogi-isms”—such as “It’s déjà vu all over again”—made him one of baseball’s most endearing characters.
