    Description

Landscape sketch of a winter scene at Church's farm in Hudson, New York. Slopes in the foreground are mostly covered in snow, with patches of dirt and grass visible. In middle distance, a copse of dark trees, rendered in brown, veils the orange light reflected off the Hudson River beyond the grove at center. Mountainous terrain extends toward the hazy, indefinite horizon. Above, the setting sun illumates the edges of an otherwise gray cloud in bright hues of yellow and orange. The hazy atmosphere below glows due to the sun's light, which is partially blocked at left producing a column of shadow. Muted blue of the twilight sky visible along upper margin.
