    Description

    An inscription on the bottom of this perfume bottle reads in part “MARY CHESS . NEW YORK / WHITE LILAC / . . . / NEW YORK.” Mary Chess (1878-1964) was born in Louisville, Ky.; moved to London with her husband; and established the Mary Chess perfume company in New York in 1932. “I owe it all to Fanny, my cook,” she told a reporter in 1948.
