Description
Referee William Red Friessell used this whistle during one of the seven Army-Navy football games that he officiated. A former diver at Princeton Unversity, Beginning in 1922, Freissel officated for 22 years, becoming best known for his (acknowledged) mistake in a 1940 matchup between Dartmouth and Cornell, a contest now known as the fifth down gamel. An official in 575 professional and collegiate contests, Friessel is represented at the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH.
