Description

Each of these twenty scrolls measures (rolled) 24.5 cm. w. x 5 cm. d. x 5 cm. h. The long paper sheets are wound around wooden spools. Each scroll has text typed on it, divided into short phrases of two or three words. The machine advanced the scrolls at a speed that could be varied, allowing students to read text at different rates. According to the accession file, the scrolls represent twenty exercises found in Dr. Ruth Strang’s book Study Type of Reading Exercises (Columbia University, 1936). Strang (1895-1971) was an earlier student at Teachers College than Westover abd was appointed a professor there in 1940.
For related objects, see the machine in which the scrolls fit (1993.0182.01) and a copy of Westover’s dissertation (1993.0189.03).
