Artist
Edward Mitchell Bannister, born St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada 1828-died Providence, RI 1901
Luce Center Label
As a young man, Edward Bannister worked as a cook on a trading ship, and this early experience influenced the subjects of his paintings. His love for the sea and lifelong interest in sailing appear in his many marine paintings, but also emerge in some of his landscape sketches, like this one, in which the green hills resemble a tumultuous ocean.
