Description

The 1876 presidential election was a heated and complex one, ultimately drawing the highest voter turnouts in U.S. history. Samuel Tilden, the reforming former Governor of New York state and Democratic nominee, focused his campaign on printed material, including pamphlets and songbooks, ultimately printing over 27,000,000 pieces of material. After a contested and complicated election in which Tilden won the popular vote by 3%, he ultimately lost the presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes, decided by the House of Representatives.
