Thomas Lovejoy was a renowned conservation ecologist who championed Amazon rainforest preservation and popularized the term “biological diversity.” He also educated U.S. presidents and policy makers about climate change and the global extinction crisis. In 1979, Lovejoy launched the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project with support from Brazil‘s National Institute of Amazonian Research and the Smithsonian Institution. The project remains one of the largest continuous experiments in biological ecosystems.
Lovejoy brought politicians, philanthropists, and celebrities to his research base near Manaus (known as Camp 41) so that they could experience a largely undisturbed rainforest and advocate for greater protection from development through policy or publicity campaigns.
Despite his many dire predictions about climate change, deforestation, and mass extinctions, Lovejoy remained hopeful in a 2021 interview: “I think there’s every reason to be optimistic and engaged and try and make that future turn out better than current trajectories might imply.”
