Exhibition Label

Professional photographer Rollie McKenna captured many famous British and American poets, including Dylan Thomas, T. S. Eliot, Ted Hughes, Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and Sylvia Plath. Many of McKenna’s portraits have become the defining images of her subjects, particularly in the case of Thomas and Plath. This vintage print of Plath was taken in 1959 at her 9 Willow Street apartment in Boston. At this stage in her life, Plath was auditing Robert Lowell’s poetry seminar at Boston University with Anne Sexton.
