Description
Landscape sketch showing a dramatic view of layered clouds at sunset above the Catskill Escarpment, as viewed from a spot near the artist's estate known as Olana. Rolling, partially wooded terrain extends across the foreground with a figure at lower center. In the middle distance, the Hudson River reflects the colors of the clouds above, while beyond it, the foothills of the Catskill Mountains are visible. A boat sails along the river at right. In the background, low clouds cling to the ridge of the Catskill Escarpment, while layered cloud banks above and behind it are variously lit in shades of gold, dark blue, and gray. Between them, a band of blue sky is visible. These clouds create a dramatic atmospheric effect.
