Summary
American astronaut Shannon Lucid wore this flight suit on during her American-record breaking six month stay on board the Russian Mir Space Station (March-September 1996). This suit is designed to ameliorate the debilitating effects of prolonged weightlessness on the skeletal muscular system experienced during long periods in microgravity, such as Dr. Lucid's stay on the space station as a member of the Mir 21 crew. Dr. Lucid's mission on board the Mir was part of a series of joint Russian-American missions that were planned in preparation for the construction of an international space station.
