    Artist

    James Amos Porter

    Caption

Marian Anderson is positioned squarely at the center of this drawing of her 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Her facial expression is serene and her hands are clasped in front of her. Two couples stand in the foreground: a Black couple on the right and a white couple on the left. This intimate composition enabled artist James A. Porter to focus on the setting and monumentality of the occasion. The drawing, which features a numbered grid over the composition, was likely a study for a larger painting.
