This medium sized orchid is named for the American orchid botanist Dr. Mark Whitten, who specialized in Stanhopea.

Pendant inflorescence is 8-12" (20-30 cm) long with 2-4 yellow flowers speckled in purple that open simultaneously. Flowers are 2.4" (6 cm) across.
