    Object Details

    Honoree

    Owney, American, c. 1888 - 1897

    Description

Owney received this identification token from Orville S. Cullar, a Railway Mail Service (RMS) clerk. Cullar, born in Indiana, worked on the mail trains between New York, New York and Chicago, Illinois. While not riding the trains, Cullar lived at 1129 S. Lafayette in South Bend, Indiana.
Cullen is one of the few Railway Mail Service clerks whose tags are currently among Owney’s trinkets. The RMS clerks were the postal workers who allowed Owney to ride along in the cars while they were doing their work.
