When actress Shirley MacLaine turned fifty on April 24, 1984, she was enjoying what she said was the best year of her life. She had just won a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Actress in the critically acclaimed film Terms of Endearment. She was also singing and dancing and packing the 1,992-seat Gershwin Theatre in New York City with her one-person show, Shirley MacLaine on Broadway. In addition, the paperback edition of her book on spiritualism, Out on a Limb, had just reached the top of the New York Times best-seller list. Little wonder that Time posed her doing a theatrical high kick for its cover that spring.
