Scimitar-horned Oryx Reintroduction Update - Downlisted From Extinct in the Wild to Endangered!

On December 11, 2023, the IUCN announced the downlisting of the scimitar-horned oryx from Extinct in the Wild to Endangered. The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is proud to be a part of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi's ambitious reintroduction program in Chad. Through this program, Smithsonian scientists track reintroduced oryx and addax, both to monitor the reintroduced populations and learn more about their ecology and movement behavior. To date, more than 500 scimitar-horned oryx have been born in Chad as a result of this reintroduction program – a wild success for the future of this incredible species.
