Summary
The Sample Scale was designed to weigh containers of rocks and soil during the lunar mission. It was important to know the weights so that pre-determined weight limits were not exceeded at lunar lift-off. This type of scale was used on Apollo 14, 15, 16, and 17. It was calibrated in 5 lb increments up to 80 lbs. 80 lbs on the Moon is equivalent to approximately 480 lbs on Earth.
This particular unit was used for training and NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian in 1974.
